Record power savings for RP in Earth Hour 2009

I was super giddy to hear that Philippines topped the rest of the world in terms of participation the the recent Earth Hour 2009. But as Nix said, we should be more concerned of how much power we were able to save. And the results are here. I’m so proud that me and my whole family participated!

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippines topped last Saturday’s hour-long lights-off drive in terms of power savings.

According to information posted in the website wwf.org.ph, the Philippines saved 611 MWh of power during the Earth Hour 20009, outshining the rest of the world.

The website also disclosed that with over 15 million Filipinos in 650 major cities participating in the event last Mar. 26, the Philippines edged out all other countries, including Australia where the first Earth Hour was conducted in 2007.

Greece placed second with 484 cities and towns participating, followed by Australia with 309.

The website indicated that the power conserved by the Philippines during voluntary event was estimated to be equal to that saved by shutting down a dozen coal-fired power plants for an hour.

Earth Hour 2009’s power savings was deemed “at least 10 times more massive and effective” compared to last year.

Correction: Earth Hour happened last March 28, 2009 and not March 26.

If you participated in this event, wherever you are, Thank You! Let us all continue to work together in saving Mother Earth.

Ma-sim and Wa-yet

Ayex started talking earlier than usual but in German – in words none of us can understand. Over the months, I noticed how her speech evolved and Ayex does not fail to amaze me and Mon.

After dinner last night, Ayex was already begging for milk but I haven’t cleaned up myself. To prevent her from throwing temper tantrums again, I reminded Mon that we still have some sour gummy worms. He took it from our hiding place and showed it to Ayex. This should be my cue to go. I asked Ayex to give me a piece before I head to the bathroom. I was so surprised when I heard her say, No, bad, masim (maasim/sour). When did she learn how to say maasim (sour)?

After cleaning up, I finally gave her milk. While she was feeding, Mon and I were talking about something. Our voice was not too loud as Ayex usually sleeps while feeding. After a few minutes, she stood up, faced her dad with her pointer finger in front of her mouth and said, Daddy, wayet (quiet). Understanding what she meant, Mon and I laughed so loud! It was the first time we heard her say that. While we were laughing, she faced me and said, Mommy, wayet! This time with real conviction. When Mon and I stopped laughing, she breastfed once more.

Her vocabulary is indeed increasing very fast. She has started reading more books and even repeating what she hears from the television! Our little baby is now a real toddler!

Feeling Heavy

I’ve been feeling heavy since yesterday – probably it’s the time of the month or perhaps, because of the sad and terrible news I got from a text message.

When I woke up past midnight yesterday to pee, I checked my mobile phone and saw four messages from 2 different people. Thinking they were again another forwarded messages, I didn’t bother opening them.

When I’m finally fully awake yesterday morning, I checked the text messages I got. The messages from the other person is indeed another forwarded messages, the other messages had terrible news.

The news was so terrible that I still feel heavy today. I’m still not sure if that’s the reason or it’s the time of the month. One of the most promising graduates of my batch died from a car accident Saturday evening. I was told that they were on their way to Lucena with her boyfriend’s brother. She was seated in the passenger side. A bus hit them. I texted some of my classmates who I think know her (since we are from different major) about it and they were also shocked like me. One of my classmates whom I texted said that they were on their way to Lucena for a Visita Iglesia or Church Visit. A classmate’s mom was also in their group and saw what happened.

I may be over-reacting here. We’re not really close. We just became classmates in some of the classes I dropped because I didn’t like the teacher so I took their schedule as a replacement. Both of us were a member of the committee that organized our college pictorial and yearbook. That’s it. Probably, I’m this affected because she’s just my age. I came to realize once more that my life is a borrowed life. That eventually, I will have to return this life to my creator irregardless if I still have choices to make or chances left to take. It made me think again of the things I have done to date. Were they good or were they bad? It makes me think now how am I living this life, is it according to God’s plan? Or am I missing something, something more important?

If I were single, I’d probably not this affected. But I have a husband and a little girl. What would happen if God takes back my life all of a sudden?

To Sarah Kaye de Guzman, may your good soul rest in peace.
