Musically Inclined: Not!

Yesterday, in the jeepney ride on my way to work, I saw a girl wearing a COCC pin. COCC means Cadet Officer Candidate Course. I bet she’s a 3rd year high school student. Then I had a realization. I asked myself why I opted to join the Drum and Lyre Corp instead of COCC.

Ok, here’s a little background. In our school, if you are a member of the Drum and Lyre Corp, you are exempted from CAT (Citizens Army Training). That means no wearing of fatigue and shirt on Fridays; no training and unnecessary bullying from cadet officers. That was my motivation when I joined the Drum and Lyre Corp when I was in 2nd year high school.

Yesterday, during the jeepney ride, I realized that maybe, I could have done better if I joined the COCC instead. Why? Because I don’t have the gift of music. Yes, I like to sing and I’d love to learn how to play an instrument or two but it is just very hard on me. I think back and I can’t remember what other pieces I was able to play correctly (without pretending) other than the Philippine National Anthem. The feeling sucks but I have accepted this fact now.

I can see that Ayex loves to sing, play her guitar and improvised drum. I hope that she has the gift. I hope that unlike me, she’ll be musically inclined. And if she has it, I will definitely do my best to hone her talent.

No Homework on Weekends: Yay or Nay?

DepEd Memorandum No. 392 states that “no homework shall be given during weekends for pupils to enjoy their childhood, and spend quality time with their parents without being burdened by the thought of doing lots of homework.”

This is in today’s news, which me and my mom talked about. While I am no longer a student, I certainly feel for all the students. No wonder students of this generation are so stressed. They go to school in the early morning and leave in mid-afternoon. When they get home, they take with them tons of homework to do for various subjects and sometimes, they even have to review for quizzes for the following school day. At the end of everything, these students end up very tired. They no longer enjoy their childhood.

My mom is also right when she said that students should not only learn or study when they have homework. This memorandum could even teach students to have better study habits because this time, they truly enjoy it and not only because they are bound to do so. So for me, I think this is a very good call.

He who rejects change is the architect of decay. The only human institution which rejects progress is the cemetery.

Hi there! I'm Nicquee and this is my little space in this world wide web. I'm a mom of two and is happily married. I started this blog as literally my online journal where I dump my emotions.
