Update on the BPA issue and Avent

Remember my previous post where I learned about the BPA issue? If you haven’t read it, go here first.

I got that statement from Avent’s US site. It somehow gave me a relief but seeing blog about the BPA issue here and there gave me the need to research some more. I received a feedback that the answer I took from the US site is based on a 2005 study and that there were recent developments on the issue dated January 2008. I’m not panicking but as a mom, I need to know if I’m really putting my little angel in danger. So I researched some more and found this:

What is Bisphenol-A, and what are the issues surrounding BPA?

Philips AVENT is aware of media reports focusing on Bisphenol A (BPA) and polycarbonate. We would like to help our customers better understand why Philips AVENT, as well as other companies, use these materials.

Polycarbonates are used in thousands of consumer products such as reusable food containers, lifesaving medical devices and sport safety equipment. Manufacturers of such products, including baby bottles, rely upon polycarbonates because they prevent cracking, shattering and other hazards that can lead to injuries. The key concern for parents is whether leaching from polycarbonate bottles causes harm.

The effects of leached BPA have been studied extensively by regulatory agencies, including the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Various governing bodies have found as follows:

  1. In January 2008, the FDA reconfirmed its long standing view regarding the safety of polycarbonate for food contact, including baby feeding bottles. The FDA has indicated that it actively reviews the safety of BPA and recently completed a review of available data obtained from animal studies, and migration studies. Based on the results of the migration studies conducted by FDA chemists, the FDA determined that the “dietary exposure to BPA is orders of magnitude below the levels known to cause toxic effects in animals.”
  2. International regulatory agencies responsible for consumer protection, including the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), the UK Food Standards Agency, the German Federal Institute of Risk Assessment, and the Japanese Ministry of Health have all studied the use of BPA and concluded that it can be used in the manufacture of baby bottles.

Philips AVENT is committed to meeting or exceeding the standards set by the FDA and all other acknowledged authorities around the world. All plastics used in Philips AVENT products are FDA-approved and recognized as “safe for food contact application.” Philips AVENT Bottles are also independently tested in accordance with and comply with the latest European Standard for Drinking Equipment for Children-EN14350: 2004 which looks specifically at the acceptable daily intake of BPA for children. By looking to these acknowledged authorities, Philips AVENT will continue to deliver the best products to customers.

Our bottles have been and will continue to be used by millions of healthy babies in over 70 countries worldwide.

I hope this also reassures other moms in the world who use Avent for their babies just like it did to me.

AVENT is dangerous – I think NOT!

Recently, I stumbled upon a blog published by a fellow multiply user. In her blog, she said that she might throw all her son’s AVENT bottles due to BPA. I read the link of the article she provided and found that it was dated 2003. That’s like 5 years ago!

So I found an answer from a multiply site (Sister Jing’s) and decided to share it here.

What is Bisphenol-A, and what are the issues surrounding BPA

AVENT is aware of the recent media reports focusing on Bisphenol A (BPA) and polycarbonate. We would like to help our customers better understand why many companies, including AVENT, use these materials to manufacture baby bottles.

Polycarbonates are used in thousands of consumer products such as reusable food containers, lifesaving medical devices and sport safety equipment. Manufacturers of such products, including baby bottles use polycarbonate because it prevents cracking, shattering and other hazards that can lead to injuries. The key concern for parents is whether BPA can get into their child’s food through leaching from polycarbonate bottles.

Various governing bodies have found as follows:

  • In November 2005 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reconfirmed the safety of the use of polycarbonate for food contact including baby feeding bottles stating that “based on all the evidence available at this time, the FDA sees no reason to change its long-held position that current uses with food are safe.”
  • Extensive reviews by the U.S. National Toxicology Program and independent scientists under the Harvard Center for Risk Analysis have determined that BPA used in consumer products does not pose a risk to human health.
  • International regulatory agencies responsible for consumer protection, including the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), the UK Food Standards Agency, the German Federal Institute of Risk Assessment, and the Japanese Ministry of Health have all studied the use of BPA and concluded that it can be used in the manufacture of baby bottles.

All plastics used in AVENT products are FDA-approved and recognized as “safe for food contact application.” AVENT Bottles are also independently tested in accordance with and comply with the latest European Standard for Drinking Equipment for Children-EN14350: 2004 which looks specifically at the acceptable daily intake of BPA for children. AVENT is committed to meeting or exceeding the standards set by the FDA and all other acknowledged authorities around the world. Our bottles have been and will continue to be used by millions of healthy babies in over 70 countries worldwide.

This is very re-assuring. I went a little panicky when I read the first blog because I’ve been very happy with my AVENT products and I don’t think there’ll be better products out there for Ayex and her future sibling/s.

Ayex has Roseola

So we went to CMC again yesterday and saw another doctor, Dra. Naidas.

While still in the reception of Dra. Naidas’ clinic, I can hear her interview the parents of the baby before us. I heard something about tigdas or measles. Then I asked her secretary, “Uso po ba tigdas? Ito po (pointing to Ayex) may tigdas din eh.” She replied to me with “Hindi tigdas yan.”

Ok. That’s a bit reassuring. When it’s our turn, the doctor didn’t noticed Ayex’s rashes at once. She only saw it when we showed it to her. Then she said, “That’s Roseola Infatum or what they call tigdas hangin”. I stressed the bold part because I have this feeling that she didn’t want us to be confused with Roseola and Measles.

Further, she said Ayex can take a bath. She can also get some air through an electric fan (hoooray!) We just let all the rashes go out and they will be gone in 3-5 days. But. Yes, there’s a but. She told us to have Ayex undergo CBC just to be sure. Ok, I started to panic. They will get blood from my baby. They will need to prick my baby to do that.

I can’t compose myself but I know I have to be strong. The procedure was delayed because we forgot to take a Medicard form from the 10th floor before heading to the laboratory. After some 30 minutes, Mon is back. He arrived just in time to catch another baby crying out loud and her grandma is telling the medtech who took her blood “Bad ka!”. I can feel the little girl’s pain. I keep hugging Ayex tight and kissing her head. My eyes are starting to get hot and I know, if I don’t compose myself, tears will be falling soon even before the medtech takes Ayex blood.

“Alessandra Monique” called the medtech. She asked us to sit down as she prepares her parapernalia. Ayex is trying to explore the new things she is seeing such as tin cans with cottons, small glass tubes etc etc. I told her those are not ours. Such a curious cat! I asked the medtech how is she going to do it. To my slight relief, she said she’d only prick Ayex’s finger. She made me hold Ayex’s right arm as she holds her middle finger. After a few seconds, she’s already gathering Ayex’s blood sample. My didn’t cry. She’s so brave. She’s watching what the medtech is doing while I’m still hugging her tight. I thank the Lord for giving Mon, Ayex and Me so much courage.

The result of the CBC is ok. It’s only Roseola. Nothing more serious. On Saturday, we’re going back to Dra. Naidas for a follow up check up.
