Of Flyers and Leaflets

If you are a frequent visitor of this blog, you have probably noticed that I am a mom who tries to live as green as possible. I work at segregating our trash, I let my daughters draw on recycled papers, I keep cartons and such for future usage and I teach our girls the importance of what we are doing.

There are many things in this world that we end up wasting, top things that I hate see go to to waste are water and paper. I still let the girls play during bath-time but I make sure that we use as little water as possible for their play. As for the paper, that explains why I hate flyers and leaflets.

I hate flyers and leaflets because their distribution is not targeted. Since it is such, people end up throwing whatever paper is handed to them in the trash bin. These people can easily say no as a person/agent hands a flyer but I do not get it why they do not. I do that almost all the time, specially if I know that the flyer contains something that I am completely uninterested.

Recently though, I have been accepting flyers about real-estate and cars. Well, not that we have money to buy those but I save them for future use. And oh, someone left an ecasino guide leaflet by our car’s windshield the other week at the grocery. I kept that too for future use. Who knows I might try that and get lucky.

I hope that people will learn to say no and not accept things they are not interested in. It will not bring trash to their homes and it will save Mother Earth.

Smoking is Dangerous

I knew that already but still decided to try smoking back in my college days. I think I was in second college when I started. I tried it because I want to get a first hand experience of what smokers feel when they lit a stick. Also, I guess I wanted to belong since many of my classmates then have this vice. Since I only have enough money for my daily expenses, I never bought my own cigarette, ever. I only smoke when somebody gives me a stick. I guess that is a factor why I was able to stop smoking for good. Plus I clearly know that it will not do me any good.

danger smokingHere are some facts why smoking is dangerous.

  • Smoking gives you bad breathe, gum disease and tooth decay. If you smoke, do not get surprised when people talk to you at a distance or cover their mouth when you open yours.
  • Smoking affects how oxygen is transported to the brain and can cause headache that can lead to stroke.
  • When smoke passes through a smokers chest, the chemicals in it attack the bronchi and can later on develop into severe coughing. When the bronchi are weaken, infection can easily build up. When infection build up, it can lead to lung cancer.
  • Smokers are also at the risk of getting high blood pressure and stroke. Nicotine, a substance found in cigarettes, rises the blood’s pressure and makes the blood clot easily. Carbon monoxide robs the blood of oxygen and leads to the development of cholesterol deposits on the artery walls.
  • Smoking also affects fertility. It also affects the development of an unborn child in a mother’s womb.

I could go on in enumerating bad effects of smoking but I know, these can already make you stop smoking now. Do not let smoking reduce your life span by ten-twelve years. Quit now while it is not yet too late.

Help a Child Become an “e.Studyante” With P&G Promo Packs

I am all for promoting good education. In fact, that is the reason why despite having no more permanent job, I continue my donations with Unicef Philippines because I know every donation will help a child continue with his/her studies. Even me, I worked hard as I study so I can help my mom send me to school. And thus, when I learned that our community is brewing up something that concerns education, I gave my all out support for it. Yes, you read that right. Pinay Mommies Community supports the P&G e.Studyante Program

e.studyante

Here is the official press release.

School children in the Philippines face many challenges; sometimes, even the simple walk to school in the morning can be an arduous journey. Students cross rivers, traverse mountain peaks, even go through battlegrounds just to go to school. And when they arrive, they are faced with meager resources – overcrowded classrooms, the lack of books and school supplies – which all make for an uninspiring learning environment.

That is why starting on its 76th year, Procter and Gamble (P&G) Philippines is setting out to make these students’ journey more worthwhile. Taking its commitment to education to the next level, P&G will provide technology and connectivity to Filipino students nationwide with its e.Studyante program.

Along with partner Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) and Synergeia Foundation, the e.Studyante program will provide kids from selected schools with an XO Laptop from the One Laptop per Child (OLPC) Association. The XO laptop is a rugged, low-power, connected laptop especially designed to make learning more engaging and more fun for students.

Students can use their laptops not just to learn but to share and connect with each other, with their communities and with the world – helping them all become an “e.Studyante.”
