Adding Decks or Patios to Your Home

Increasingly, more and more homeowners are now electing to stay in their current homes and having home improvement renovations or additions performed. Some are still leery of getting into the housing market right now, which is a result of the recent recession and subsequent recovery, has been up and down. This is a risk that some homeowners wish to take a chance on right now. Some homeowners, happy with the home and land they have now, consider making improvements to their property a very wise investment, one that can ultimately pay off handsomely in time when the housing market is in full, stable growth again.

One terrific home improvement addition that is both a great investment and one that can provide an attractive area that is enjoyable to spend time on while increasing recreational space is a new deck or patio. While many homeowners enjoy do-it-yourself projects around the house, an installation of a new deck or patio is a project best undertaken by a company that specializes in deck and patio installation. And this can be especially important if the deck needs to be built over an uneven and/or elevated surface.

Uneven surfaces with any measure of elevation drop will require components that are specific to elevated decking. Homeowners that are considering a patio or deck addition should look for a company, like Elevated Deck Systems, that specialize in and have great experience constructing superior-quality decks, patio areas, and pedestrian walkways.

Leading companies implement a pedestal supported decking system. Extremely durable and functional Bison pedestals will be used, either with the Level. It or Versadjust adjustable deck supports. Additional slope compensation can be added installing the Bison Base Leveling system. If you want to build over cracked concrete patios or on compacted soil, these deck supports are capable of placement over these areas. No need to pay for a costly tear-out. They even work on rooftop decks.

One major consideration homeowners should be conscious of is water drainage. When looking into companies that install decks and patios, it’s best to be sure that water drainage is an important factor that the company emphasizes. You want to ensure that proper drainage will be provided, with equipment and supplies that are waterproof, mold and freeze/thaw impervious.

The next big consideration that must be made, the most visible area that can really provide an attractive and distinctive look to the home, is the deck material to be used. Two extremely popular materials used, both very attractive, highly durable, long-lasting, and low maintenance, are wood tiles and hydra pressed pavers.

Hardwood species used in wood tiles include Massaranduba, Ipe, and Cumaru. Each variety has a Class A Fire Rating. All but the Cumaru tiles are available in custom sizes, and meet ASTM standards in Fire Rating, Slip Resistance, and Wind Uplift. Each respective variety has its own color and Janka Hardness Rating, with the Ipe wood tile available in either smooth or grooved surfaces (the Massaranduba is available in grooved surface only).

Hydra pressed pavers are stunning concrete slabs that come in a variety of finishes and colors. Finishes can range from a simple shot blast to a natural stone look with a slate texture. For a finished look, the top edges are slightly chamfered. These pavers are really ideal for pool decks, garden patios, and pedestrian terraces and plazas. They are very popular in residential use and are also commonly seen in commercial and municipal applications.
