5 Ways to Keep Your Home Scorpion-Free

In some of the warmer and drier parts of the country, it is common to see a scorpion periodically. While spotting one outside does not cause an issue, having an uninvited scorpion taking residence in your home could be distressing. What is even worse is when you start seeing multiple scorpions throughout your home. The good news is that most scorpions are not terribly poisonous, but getting stung by one could cause pain or a reaction. The bad news is you may have an infestation of these nuisance creatures. Here are five steps to take to rid your home of scorpions.

1. Seal Cracks and Holes

To keep your home less friendly to any kind of pest, you should start by examining your exterior walls for cracks and holes. These tiny spaces are what allows creatures such as scorpions to come inside and begin an infestation. It is simple to fix this problem. All you need is some inexpensive caulk or sealant and a few hours of your time. Then, you need to go fill in all of the cracks and holes to keep these pests out.

2. Use Lavender

Some homeowners have found that planting lavender around the home keeps scorpions away. If you are not able to have lavender plants in and around your home, you could try using lavender oil throughout your rooms. Not only does lavender smell fresh and inviting, but it can also give you additional benefits of keeping other annoying insects away, such as houseflies or mosquitoes.

3. Clear the Clutter

Many bugs and pests thrive in an environment where there is a lot of ground cover. If your yard is full of weeds and overgrown shrubs, it is time to tackle this project and keep it free of the clutter. Inside of your home, you will need to make sure everything is put away and food is not left out. Cleaning your home regularly and clearing away food crumbs, trash, and clutter can help keep all types of pests from burrowing through the hidden parts of your home.

4. Call a Professional

If you still have problems with scorpions or other pests after taking some of these steps, it is a good idea to call a professional who specializes in pest removal such as Arizona’s Best Choice Pest & Termite Services. This way, you do not have to worry about these annoying creatures taking over your home.

5. Get a Cat

Finally, another popular option for homeowners who may also have a mouse problem is to get a cat. Cats can be expert hunters and catch mice and scorpions easily. Most people have more success with female cats for keeping pests away. Unfortunately, all cats have different personalities, so you may end up with a cat who does not like to hunt. Check out your local animal shelter and ask for a cat who has a history of catching mice for best results.

Having a scorpion problem in your home can be a little unsettling, but there are plenty of ways to keep these pests outside. If you work hard to make your home scorpion-free, you can start enjoying the beautiful climate of the Southwest and avoid this common issue permanently.
